NJDOE Standardized Testing

North Brunswick Township’s third through high school students will participate in annual spring testing. All testing will take place during the morning in each elementary school and Linwood Middle School, and will occur during the morning and afternoon at the high school. It is important that your child arrives to school on time. All children in a testing group will begin testing at the same time. Testing times are not flexible and children who arrive late will not be allowed to test in that session. If there is a delayed opening, or if school is closed due to inclement weather, testing will be rescheduled.

We will explain testing expectations to the children to reduce anxiety. We ask that you ensure that your child is rested, eats breakfast, and is relaxed. Eating breakfast helps keep the children from becoming hungry and distracted. If your child wears a device such as glasses, hearing aids, etc., be sure he/she remembers to bring it and wear it during all testing sessions. Also, students are encouraged to bring their own earbuds/headphones for testing. Encourage your child to do his/her best work possible, but try not to be overly anxious about test scores. Too much emphasis on test scores can be upsetting to children.

Lastly, please do not send your child to school if illness is apparent. There will be time set aside for make-up testing for students who miss school due to illness.

Assessment guidelines & graduation requirements for the Classes of 2021 and beyond continue to be reviewed by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE), but more importantly, they have stated that this does NOT eliminate the assessments or the requirement to participate in them. All New Jersey public schools are to schedule NJSLA testing, as outlined by the NJDOE, for all students in grades 3-high school for the 2018-19 school year. Any changes to the Spring testing schedule, and/or high school graduation requirements, will be made upon official notification from the NJDOE, and all stakeholders will be notified accordingly. All school districts must continue to follow the current guidelines for state testing and high school graduation until notified by the NJDOE.

Standardized Test Resources: 

In the 2014-15 school year, New Jersey transitioned from its former assessments to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) in mathematics and English language arts. The PARCC assessments more accurately measure the higher-level skills developed under the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and provide parents and educators with meaningful information to improve teaching and learning.


For the 2017-18 school year, all students in grade 8, grade 11, and grade 4 or 5 must be administered the NJSLA-Science field test. The NJSLA-S assessment is a computer-based assessment, and the majority of students should be administered the assessment using a computer. In limited circumstances, based on a need documented in a valid Section 504 Plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP), students who are unable to use a computer will need to take the assessment using paper and pencil.
*as of November 2017, the change to the elementary state science assessment regarding grades 4 and 5 is still pending the State Board of Education’s review and adoption, specific information about the proposed changes in grades 4 and 5 will be forthcoming in the next few months.

In the 2014-15 school year, an alternate assessment for students with the most significant intellectual disabilities in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science, the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM), was implemented. The state of New Jersey and other states are working with the University of Kansas to implement this assessment system.

In 2016, the WIDA Consortium began administration of the annual summative assessment, ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 for all English Language Learners in New Jersey public schools in grades K-12.
