Supporting Grieving Children
Dear Parents,
The passing of Mrs. Pappas certainly leaves a devastating loss for children and adults alike. In order to assist you with helping your child understand this loss, the Linwood Middle School Crisis Team drafted a document for you to review. Please do so at your convenience. Additionally, it is most appropriate to discuss with your children that either wish or plan to attend the funeral mass for Mrs. Pappas the nuances of such an event. While the District will have counselors available for those children and adults that require it, the strong recommendation is for you to accompany your children to the funeral if they attend. In short, it will be an emotional experience; it will behoove any children to have the comfort of their parent there. With that said, we will have support systems embedded should that not be the case.
The funeral arrangements are below:
Visitation: Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, October 13 from 2pm-8pm
Mass: Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, October 14, 10am (doors open at 9am)
Sincerely,
Brian Brotschul, Ed.D.
Principal

Linwood Middle School be closed on October 14, 2014
Dear Parents, On behalf of Dr. Zychowski, our Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Liguori, our Board of Education President and the entire Board of Education, I would like to convey both how difficult this week has been for Linwood and the entire District. Your collective outpouring of support for our staff members and collective children has been most appreciated. While we grieve the passing of beloved Language Arts Teacher Aubrey Pappas and celebrate her legacy, we also are charged with ensuring that your children are able to receive important services and supports during this most unfortunate and troubling time. I am hopeful we have done so with sensitivity and comprehensiveness. I write to convey to you that funeral arrangements have been announced by the Pappas family. To that end, the full faculty at Linwood has requested permission to attend the funeral mass on October 14. Additionally, I have been advised that scores of students plan to attend with their families as well. In order to ensure that we can accommodate these requests as well as supporting those that continue to grieve pursue closure, the North Brunswick Board of Education has approved the recommendation from Dr. Zychowski that Linwood Middle School be closed on October 14, 2014. In exchange, Linwood will be open on November 4, 2014 (Election Day) and operate on a 12:55pm bell schedule. While there is no textbook on how to support a learning community during times of tragedy, moving in this direction offers the entire school the required support during such an unfortunate and tragic situation. If you have questions regarding these items, please contact me at 732-289-3602.

Sincerely, Brian Brotschul
